Keep calm and carry on

Stereophonics LIVE in Hamburg - lead singer Kelly Jones

Thousands of bands and singer/songwriters around the world get inspired by the alternative rock genre that emerged in the United Kingdom in the 80’s. Although my music taste in general is very broad, I always end up referring to this genre and all its subgenres when asked what kind of music I listen to.

Steorephonics, formed 1992 in Wales, UK, is pure “Brit-rock”. Having released seven studio albums since the start, it’s been one of my favourite bands for many years. The latest album “Keep calm and carry on” was released in november 2009. One of the stops on their 2010 tour with the same name as the album was at music club Grosse Freiheit 36 in Hamburg last night.

Two reasons why I enjoy their music is because of their ability to carry out one of a kind live performances and lead singer Kelly Jones whisky vocals – powerful enough to dominate in their rockier songs but also smoky and smooth enough to deliver soft ballads. Praised for their live performances, Stereophonics manages to grasp the attention of the audience from start to finish. Even when I saw them July 2008 performing open-air in Istanbul, Turkey, they knew how to put the sound in a nice little package. Yesterday’s concert in Hamburg – epic.
